The first Beetle prototypes appeared as early as 1934 – Hitler’s dream of a cheap, reliable ‘people’s car’ combined with the engineering genius of designer Ferdinand Porsche. After WW II, during which the allies had bombed the Wolfsburg factory, British officer Major Ivan Hirst resurrected the car from the ruins and set it on the way to becoming the best-selling car ever with sales of over 20 million. This distinctive split-screen version was made in 1952.
