Details

The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll 1st version 1976 Here the very first edition with a red cover. Note the subtle difference, Rock'n'Roll became Rock & Roll in 1976. State of affairs in Rock & Roll as I saw it in Rolling Stone magazine 1975-76. Contributions from then not so big names such as Lester Bangs, Peter Guralnick, Dave Marsh, Greil Marcus, Robert Christeau, Nick Cohen, Jim Miller, Paul Nelson, Barry Hansen, Ed Ward, John Landau, Greg Shaw, Robert Palmer, Joe McEwen and Langdon Winner. A variety of Journalists working at Rolling Stone or as Freelancers contribute to the pieces. Most of this list have later also delivered important solo books. The book has been adapted several times in a smaller form to the changed times and published again. In this book e.g. Steely Dan, Bruce Springsteen and The Disco are still tipped by Jim Miller as the future of Rock & Roll. It is of course funny that after its release in 1976 this book was already outdated after a few months, in England and New York Punk and New Wave were just about to break out. Paul Nelson's piece about Dylan does not seem to have made it to the 1992 edition and beyond. Too bad because it was very good. Joe
