Is also a bit difficult to search: 2 place names, x 2 countries/areas:
United Kingdom - England 243
United Kingdom 41
United Kingdom - England 157
United Kingdom 14
I hope I don't have to search in maps of 'London' from countries Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, ... if I want to add postcards of London? Or what about the country allocation?

Well, does this mean the country that is shown , or is it the country where the item is issued (as in other sections)?

I suspect the former, since Street name and Province/Region can also be entered

But that means that some postcards that don't show a "postcard" say "London" is incorrect, because that's just the theme of the card.

And only then for London - London?,
Either for all cities/municipalities or for none, I think.
And what do you do with the language of the user?
Using aliases?
Have a look at Antwerp.
If I put Bergen [Belgium] is that correct.
But the Walloon Belgian or Frenchman who puts Mons: just as correct.
And is it 1 and the same city.

That will be difficult I'm afraid. The maps (which I entered) say 'London'.
Respecting the name on the card seems the most practical to me.

If the map says 'Londres' (French) then I assume you are looking for 'Londres' by place name?

As in every section, the names in Dutch (London), English (London), French (Londres) and German (London) can be defined by the administrators. And other languages can optionally be added as an alias or name variation.

Are you going to define all Belgian villages?
I can hardly imagine that every Dutchman has already heard of Kluisbergen? Let alone the translation of it. So not everyone will think of Mont-de-l'Enclus.
And there are hundreds in Belgium.
But of course language borders do not exist in the Netherlands; As far as I know there is only 1 official national language...
The place name mentioned on the card (front) or the place name mentioned in the description on the back seems to me to be the best.

Are you going to define all Belgian villages?
If I were the admin of this section, yes!
If a map exists, the information should in principle be as complete as possible.
It's a pity that only administrators can add translations, that puts a heavy burden on few shoulders.

PS As far as the Netherlands is concerned, The Hague and La haye should of course also be found under The Hague ('s-Gravenhage) .

It is a pity that there is not yet a handbook of Postcards, that could clarify a lot.
Until then, we can of course tighten up the help texts for this.
Please think/discuss:

  • City: The name of the city or town printed on the map. If there is no name on the postcard and it is clear which place it concerns, fill it in. If unknown, leave blank.
  • Province / Region: The name of the province or region printed on the map. If there is no name on the postcard and it is clear which region it concerns, fill it in. If unknown, leave blank.
  • Country: The name of the country printed on the card. If there is no name on the postcard and it is clear which country it concerns, fill it in. If unknown, leave blank.

The problem with this is of course in which language you have to fill this in. In LastDodo we use 4 languages, depending in which language version you are logged in, you also get the A/Z lists in that language.
If you are logged in to the NL version and therefore duly fill in "London" (is on the map), you will not find this map under "London" in the A/Z list. But still I would like to see all maps of "London" with 1 click. Does anyone see a smart solution for this? So for the discrepancy between what is on the map and the language version you are logged in.

A possible radical solution could be to do all names in the language of the country of origin, just as is done in the media with Ukraine etc.

Something isn't right now...

Some fields should be deduplicated to be good.
Place should be the name on it, in Latin script of course. If it is only written in Chinese, it won't be of much use to us.

In addition, there should be a Geographical Location field (which city or town it is about). This is possible in 4 languages.
Also Region and country: geographic (the region and country of which that city or municipality is part).

Country can then become 'Producing Country'. Many cards are made in China or Taiwan. But China and Taiwan in themselves have nothing to do with the content of the map. if I'm looking for a map of London, I'm not going to look in China or Taiwan.
Anyone who manages a collection of a certain series or issue, and that series was made in China, then as a user you must be able to filter on that.
The postcards of the Belgian Congo, of the journey of the late King Baudouin , were not made in the Belgian Congo, I think. Geographically it is about that area. Stop such series (classics) under country 'Belgium' ...

A card with a postcard of Tower Bridge, with the inscription 'Greetings from the Tower' would (could) have the following interpretation:

Title: Greetings from the Tower (in the language shown on the card)
Location: London (in the language shown on the card, usually on the back)

Geographical location: London (NL) - Londres (FR - London (EN) - London (DU)
Geographical region: England (-> 4 languages)
Country: Great Britain (-> 4 languages)
Producing country: China (-> 4 languages)

Translating title and place is nonsensical, it is not on the map. It is not searched for. Title provides the first point of reference in the search. Search by what is really on the map. Greetings from the Tower.

Geographically, you should also be able to search for postcards from an area/region/city/country.
This is a second starting point in the search. Search for cards that may interest you in relation to your collection. Departing from the language of the user.
Also an emergency solution if there is no text on the card (no clue). Then there is no title.

Even more off topic...
I also note that really anything is possible as a theme. As a result of the automatic translation you will of course get crazy situations ... #9411623
Nice idea but not 'mine'. My point is underlined.
Or #8638221 with theme 'Dam and right CWL 26' ...
No idea how 'theme' contributes to ease of use in that way. Not in search (to avoid adding duplicates), and not in collection management (Shop, Collection, List of Wishes ... the essence of LD).

And at the last minute (because I have to get back to work):
The back of a postcard should be mandatory .
Only the back contains the useful information that can uniquely identify the card.

#5494277 eg can be a duplicate of #1234167 . The image is a bit more cropped at 5494277. But the item does not contain a scan of the back. Only when you actually get those two postcards (buy it!) can you determine with certainty: duplication or not. Now you either have to give it the benefit of the doubt or make a decision (remove it) that could be wrong. There are postcards with identical front (image) that are different (different publisher, different reference, ...).
What should you do with these 2 cards? Are you sure?

Raoul62 According to the dimensions, the cards are indeed identical.
Great Britain better make it United Kingdom. Otherwise the translation will immediately go wrong in my opinion. And that poor Northern Irishman is forgotten again.
And theme is an old sore. It is even used to describe cards in minute detail.
E that gives eg: Schmidt new building, house on the right, without more complete photo.
However, it is in the general manual.
Theme: preferably 1 word and plural. It will go a lot less 'wrong' with the automatic translation. But not every user knows or realizes that...
To my question freeccardwim has recently replied that it is indeed the country mentioned on the card/depicted on the front or country mentioned in description on the back.
Millions of cards are made in China; better search by publisher. Still faster?...

There can be such a difference #1234167 and #5494277 (Number 508 on card ?) sitting.
A short look in the internet and you will find which one with the number L 157 and without usa under Greetings on the back of the card.
Fronts are the same.
So the back of a postcard should be mandatory , not such a bad idea on your part.

Great Britain better make it United Kingdom.

Neither name should be used. You can choose from:

If you can't geographically assign the map to one of these specific areas based on the image, then it's not a postcard but a picture postcard. It can be thematically about Great Britain (or the UK), but that 5th field is not intended for that.

Another question, regarding provinces/regions

What is the explanation for the strokes that start with a number, and what meaning is given if there are more or less blanks/dashes in them?

+ is '-None-' the same as 'Not filled in' or does it have a special meaning?

It's a free field, so -None- just seems like nonsense, entered by a user who wanted to be "complete". The whole item #9482585 is no good, by the way, they are 3 handmade objects.

Thank you for your response. Agree that it must be about the geographical interpretation of the image on the postcard. If necessary (if there is a need for it) there can also be a field for Country of manufacture.
It would be helpful if there was also some response from the admins at Postcards: freecardwim lavas DisneyMeentwijck EricW hansvanderdoes $$$6 $$$

What is the explanation for the strokes that start with a number, and what meaning is given if there are more or less blanks/dashes in them?
Presumably the numbers at Province / Region are the French departments.

Can a Postcards administrator select the regions ('Province / region' field)
  • Goeree-Overflakkee
  • Goeree-Overflakkee
  • South Holland-Goeree-OverFlakkee
to combine?
South Holland is a province, and it is already in it. This may be merged with the correct South Holland.
