#9717547 Just entered.

On the back is a stamp of a cross in a circle with H08491 above it.
Doesn't look like the printer to me. That number is not that interesting, but that special cross looks like some kind of "order". Maybe someone will say something. Perhaps something for the Heraldry department..

Leike-w It sure looks like it. But yes Templars is "past glory and a sad ending" for many centuries... But perhaps some French people used something like "logo".

Harry56 I wouldn't yell so loudly (order/free masons). You can just buy the stamp (usually for leather). (Signet ring, etc.) ;-)

It is a Maltese cross, used as a symbol for both the Johanniter Order and the Order of Malta. The item may have come from a library of one of the branches of these orders.

Thanks again for your responses. My French is limited to French from the HBS , can get by in France, but fully understanding such a novel is many bridges too far. I'm going to see if there's a summary of this book somewhere on the internet. What I read while leafing through, many actions, many dialogues, ships that cut through all kinds of Asian waters, including Batavia. War related, because of the front cover with the skull flag perhaps also something of piracy. But certainly not a youth adventure book.

Based on your description, it looks like a childhood adventure book. According to the French Wikipedia, that is also his genre, but you probably already read that.

vertigo could indeed be a Maltese, although the specific 8 point doesn't seem to exist. Knights Templar more often use the 'stalks'. But yes, over the years the use fades.

On reflection I think you're right, I was a little too quick in my judgement. The stamp impression looks more like a Templar cross. You would also expect a symbol of the Order of Johaniter that the cross was openwork and that only the outline is shown in ink.

Always fun and educational these forum moments. It is true that this writer wrote children's books (by the way, I have known that since 1 week..) However, both the front cover and what I have made up in fragments of the content do not look youthful ... I will come back to it sometime!

When I look at it this way, it looks like an inventory stamp of a library (Which may or may not have been located in an Order of Malta/Johannite location/commandery), according to the Wikipedia of the (Catholic) Order of Malta, namely:

The Reformation caused major changes within the Order. Separated or later established Protestant branches of the Order became active in a few countries:
..

There are still a number of those surviving clubs of the Crusader Orders, for example the Teutonic Order , which owned the German House in Utrecht, where the Karel V restaurant/hotel is now located.
