Good afternoon, I have a question about the December 2017 stamps. Could it be that these have been entered twice or is there a difference? Greetings Charles

Frageria It helps if you say exactly what it is about. Not all collectors know if you this means?
It clearly states in the printing technique and details that there is a series in gravure and a series in offset printing.

Hello Jummeke, I have some stamps here in front of me but I can't tell if it's an intaglio or an offset print. Can you help me with this?.

Is it possible to place a stamp with different printing techniques in one place in the catalog and not in two places?.

The printing techniques can be divided into:
- Letterpress printing: also called letterpress or typography: the high parts of the printing form release ink on the paper (letterpress).
- Intaglio: the deep parts of the printing form releases ink on the paper (raster intaglio printing).
- Flat printing: with this printing technique there are no differences in the height of the printing form, but part of the printing form is made ink-repellent (offset).

If the same perforation and paper were used, it will be a magnifying glass or microscope to tell them apart. For example, a raster intaglio stamp can be recognized by the raster dots, which, although large ink areas have closed up, are still recognizable by the raster dots on the edges. An offset stamp does not require the use of a grid and results in a more even ink surface.
Maybe other specialist collectors have some tips.

Is it possible to put a stamp with different printing techniques in one place in the catalog and not in two places?.
I don't quite understand your question. Each stamp is a new item for LD. If they all have the same Issue, you can easily search for it (as I did). The regular stamps are labeled "Seal" and are always visible. Also use the orange button "All" at the top, because that's where the "Variety", "Plate error", ... And we have the Special field to tell where the differences are.

I mean if you look in the catalog, it's a bit messy for me personally. All the stamps are mixed up. Isn't it better if you click on a stamp and only then see the different variations. I tried with a magnifying glass to find the different printing techniques but it is difficult .

A high resolution scan can also show the difference. See the places where two different colors adjoin each other. In Jummeke's example, for example, the last d in the Netherlands, where black and salmon pink adjoin each other. Then you see black "teeth" on the d with intaglio printing, while with offset printing the stick of the d is a sharply delineated straight line. A magnifying glass (5-10 x) already shows it and is part of the standard equipment of the stamp collector

Just looked at December stamps again. With a magnifying glass and a Bitburger, I see no difference.

All stamps are mixed up.
A lot depends on whether everyone has made the effort to fill out the catalog correctly.
In this case the "Michel" number is filled in everywhere, so try the Michel sorting and they will already be better together.
There is also a "Sequence number in the series" field to find the correct sorting but that's a bit chaotic here. Volunteer wanted to correct!

in one place in the catalog and not in two places?
Charles, I think you should normally only see one instance with the 'Default' filter on. But in this case both versions will appear on your screen.
What I write below I hope to see confirmed by Dick, an experienced administrator (I'm only a rookie of a few weeks old :)).

One version, which is considered normal, has the type 'Seal'. It fits well.
The other version has 2 types: 'Variety' and 'Seal'. It's not good in my opinion. That item is normally not allowed to have the 'Seal' type. Because of the second type, these items (versions) disturb the standard overview, and that is not the intention.
Default filter is to show the 'normal' stamps so that a simple collector (most here) gets a good overview.
Specialized philatelists who find every small difference important work in the overview without a Standard filter ('Everything'). They don't mind that eleven variations and appearances of each stamp are shown.

If Dick confirms that kind of 'Seal' should disappear when using 'Variety', an LD user philatelist from the relevant country can the trick.

You attribute a little too much "power" to me. Postmaster is the super administrator, you know.
Ask for my personal opinion, then the type of stamp can be abolished if no "normal" variant is (can be) established. From the past I seem to remember that the combination "Variety + stamp" had to ensure that the stamp also became visible with the standard filter. I still argue for a display "Everything" on the first choice (country), because that saves a lot of double entry by "beginners". Then the qualification "seal" becomes completely superfluous.

... concretely in this situation (starting question of this thread) ... are you arguing that both appearances should always be shown?

The dilemma is 'Which Do I have to click on Christmas stamps' (in collection) if I, in a simple collection of the Netherlands, have the Christmas stamps of 2017 in my collection of the Netherlands?

No difference is noticeable to the naked eye. With very good eyes and a digital microscope you can apparently see a difference. A basic collector collects the 10 Christmas stamps and doesn't care about varieties, misprints, goofs or freaks. Neither does Dave. And apparently neither does NVPH (variety has same NVPH catalog number as non-variety). There are, from an ordinary collector's point of view, simply 10 Christmas stamps in 2017. Yet?

eg.
I have the copy 'Tim Hofman & Jesse Strikwerda' (left red, right a head) ...
#7024865 - NVPH 3590, serial number 3 in the issue
of
#7487349 - also NVPH 3590, but then serial number 1 in the issue

With the Default filter on, as a help for the ordinary collector, ( now)  both shown.
This  entices the common collector (I estimate about 95% of collectors) to brand one as 'DOUBLURE of'. And then you get a bigger problem.

Additional note: Based on the sequence number in the issue  I assume 7487349 from the block #7003637 or from the sheet #7001143. That these are identical?
Item 7024865 then comes (based on the serial number in the issue) from a block that is not yet present on LD. After all, I can't find an item with Christmas stamps in 2017 where such an image is in third place.
The similar stamp from the sheetlet is not yet present on LD (because it is in position 13 on the sheetlet when my eyes see me don't cheat) ...
'Weird boys those Romans' said Obelix, but the Dutch also have some quirks when it comes to stamps :)  And it's all complicated.

Just kidding. Flemings (Belgskes) can compete when it comes to idiosyncrasies, but that tends towards politics ... and that's not allowed on this forum lol

The point with regard to type remains with stamps: if ' Variety', then why any sort of 'Seal' with the same item?

The reason for the statement "DO NOT assign species 'Seal' if species 'Variety'" is clear. Then the item will not appear in the overview with the Default filter. And that's how it should be I presume?

You attribute a little too much "power" to me.
Power was not what I meant, I was referring to experience (and knowledge), especially as an administrator. For good management, the old hands must pass on to the novices what they have gathered as (life?) wisdom on their path as administrators (sometimes perhaps through trial and error). And also close ranks when the 'new' ones come up with really 'too wild' ideas...

my idea too, if it's a variety then it shouldn't be visible in the default view. Variety is for the die-hards, not for types like me...

As I wrote before, I think there is something wrong with the Sequence number in the series. You might logically think that this follows the catalog number. If one counts from left to right, the other from top to bottom (and maybe alphabetically or by color) then it becomes a soup.

The offset print is sharper than the raster intaglio. and is clearly visible if you enlarge images to 1000 pixels instead of 400

I enlarged the images extra and now see a clear difference. Only in the catalogue, by default I don't see the stamps separately anymore. Was perhaps a bit too much of a good thing?.

Frageria The 2 different editions are now included, only the standard version of the stamps is not yet. That's why it looks empty. Maybe you can enter those loose stamps?

Hello postmaster, I'll try to put the default version in, but I think it's already there in raster intaglio. I'm just not sure and I don't want to change things I'm not sure about. hint how to proceed.
