How to structure the 'Stamps' section so that every collector, buyer and seller can easily find their way through it is quite a challenge. I love challenges. And I like to hear what others think is good/not good about my brain twists and turns. As I like to reflect on how others approach that challenge.
Everything can always be different, no set-up is 'the ideal world'. Sometimes a change is an improvement, sometimes not. An idea does not have to actually lead to a change. It does keep us actively occupied in the upper room, with the matter with which we relax: stamps (according to LD interpretation, of course).
And it can free us from entrenched thought patterns.

An item in the 'Stamps' section on LD has a number of properties (properties, fields). The main 2 NOW are Sort and Type.
Due to the historical commercial success of stamps in the 'collectors' sales area, there has (I wrote: historically) a proliferation of by-products to 'market' those collectors even more.

My wild idea about the structure on LD is to add 2 important properties. With the aim of appealing to the versatile group of collectors with a differently oriented way of navigation / selection.

Broadly speaking now:
-> Category (Stamps)
-> Type (stamp, sheetlet, postal item, ecu letter, ...)
-> Type (e.g. Franking, Postage, ...)

Wild Idea:
-> Category (Philately)
-> Collecting area (Stamps - Stamps Non-postal - Merchandising - Crafting)
-> Species (depending on collection area)
-> Type (depending on Collecting Area)
-> Variant (depending on Collecting area, default = 'No')

Collection area:
1. Stamps: cfr definition (Official Postal Service, UPU, country and value).
The known exceptions to the rule (country and value on the stamp) such as for example the UK (or the 2 of the Netherlands :)) are known and not up for discussion.
The commercially oversized blocks/sheets (from France, for example) that do not fit at all on an envelope to send something, we know that, and are not up for discussion.

2. Stamps Non-Postal: including revenues, cinderella pseudophilately, fantasy world pseudophilately and charity stamps (JULEN, Tuberculosis Control, ...)

3. Merchandising philately: all derivative products that have a more or less direct link with the postal services (as publisher or involved party). Eg. the Blueprints, Blackprints, Luxury Sheets.

4. Cardboard philately: the real creation. The combination of items from areas 1, 2 and even 3 with a carrier (paper, cardboard, plastic, envelope, card), possibly even combined with items that do not fall under 1-2-3 (e.g. in combination with an ECU token , a phone card, a bank note, ...).

As long as there is an (alleged) link with post or postal services.
Those who collect Philately within this section can easily and dynamically check or uncheck their collection area within which the other selections can be used.

You may now think: why don't you make 4 sections?
No, the items are so intertwined, the collections so intertwined... and most of the other properties appear in more than one collection area. In addition, the unity (uniformity) of, for example, 'Title' and 'Series' ... No, in my opinion the 4 do indeed belong together in one unique category.

This is the basis of my idea. An involved party can normally come up with the full-page text as an explanation.
Do not initially think about the feasibility, but rather about the music that is in it.

Seems like a good idea to search for different categories now.

I once made an overview and layout for myself for the existing fields use type and type. As a basis I chose 4 usage types: Without postage value - Bar franking - Settlement - Postage stamp.

Without postage value: Blueprint / black print - Booklet - Booklet variant - Cinderella - Proof - Ecubrief - First day paper - First day ticket - FDC - Occasion envelope - Occasion card - Integrated hanging booklet - Hanging booklet - Year set - Julzegel - Children's thank you card - Folder - Maximum card - Other - Postal stationery private - Prestige booklet - Pro-Fil sheet - Soldier's stamp - Specimen - Railway vignette - Telephone letter - Telegram - W-envelope
Settlement: Postage - Package postage - Compulsory surcharge - Settlement
The following may belong to bar postage: Counter slip - Parcel stamp - Postage paid - Pre-stamping
The classification of the postage stamp usage type is somewhat more diverse. Species groups can be created from different angles:
Way of sending: Safe - Express - Airmail - Railway
Special sender: Service - Internment - Military - Field mail
Special product: Newspapers
Special issue: Automatic stamp - Personal stamp - Regional - City and Regional mail - Swiss Post (and the like)
Collective form: 2x2 - Block - Bridge pair -Combination - Reverse print - Luxury sheet - Pair - Se tenant - Series - Sheet - Stamp with tab - Loose stamp
And the most important, the varieties: Phosphorus Variety - Color Variety - Paper Variety - Plate Flaw - Plate Variety - Roll Seal - Perforation Variety - Type Variety - Variety - Watermark Variety
So far my turn. I think all usage types and types included in LastDodo have been processed. There will certainly be improvements.
The gallery will contain the Postage use type and Single Stamp type, possibly also series. Personally, I would like to select all varieties at once, so that you can see at a glance which varieties there are, what the differences are and which varieties have already been introduced.
