Recently I saw that the series names consist of the series of homage albums. Not that many albums have been listed within this series; as far as I could find 12 in Dutch, 4 in French. A homage is a tribute to someone or something. With the French homage albums you can see the album La galerie des gaffes, released on the occasion of 60 years Gaston / Guust. A similar album for Agent 327 does not qualify as a homage album.

The Last Pharaoh of Blake and Mortimer is a tribute album, but why? Because François Schuiten said he sees this as a tribute? Are the albums written by Yves Sente not a tribute?

The albums Rembrandt and Andy van Typex are a kind of tribute to respectively Rembrandt van Rijn and Andy Warhol, so also homage albums. And didn't Erik Kriek say that his latest book De Balling is a tribute to Icelandic myths and sagas?

In my opinion, the term homage album is too vague to use it consistently in the catalog and this series should disappear as far as I am concerned. But I would like to be convinced of the opposite.

I understand your considerations, but do you have any alternatives to the series name?

The usual names we use so far. So Scratch releases HC or Blake and Mortimer releases HC (French). In any case, they are unambiguous and can be used consistently.

Well, and that is not possible, because then they will be placed between the normal series. Please note: this always concerns albums that are made once by other authors.

And I find that a difficult one. Because what distinguishes Schuiten's album from Berserik / van Dongen's album? Because it is only 1 album and Berserik / van Dongen 2 albums? I know Schuiten will quit so there will most likely not be a second Blake and Mortimer from his hand; but such a distinction seems somewhat artificial.

Incidentally, I saw it by coincidence because I never search for series names because they are not distinctive enough.

Aren't these textbook examples of One-off Releases? A book that, by following the standard series name procedure publisher + cover, would end up in a series where it does not belong

You can record "homage" in a definition as a special kind of one-off releases, existing series \ hero made by other than its own authors blabla ...

but .... then you immediately get stuck with "Kluifje in Brothelie" parodies, which are strictly speaking also homages.

Another problem with the series name homage is that it really only says something about the content of the book. Series should say as much as possible about the form of the publication, not about the content. Through this series of homages, you will group books with the same type of content. The Series field is not intended for that and you should not use it for that.

Following on from this, the Sonometer by Suske en Wiske .
First they had the softcover placed with the blue series. I have also put that (like all other Sonometer albums) as a 'homage' album. Where does that belong now? With the blue series or with homage album?

Can we make a separate series of the Sonometer? Because soon the next homage album will be released and we will have a limping count

What is your proposal and in terms of implementation these publications do not fit in 1 series?

Correct.
But the publisher has also never mentioned that it belongs in the homage series. For me it is rather the "30 years Vandersteen death commemoration" series. And they all belong to that, whatever version.

Actually it was intended as the final piece of the blue integral series , says the publisher.

But let me keep them standing, I just got the question from someone who likes the softcover very much had seen the original Blue series as number 9 (and entered it accordingly). (No. 8, which never appeared, is also skipped in the count.)
So I moved the softcover to the homage, and wondered if I had done the right thing.

If I can get involved in the discussion for a moment (I was the one who classified the album as No. 9 of the Blue Series, partly because this was also announced as such by the publisher and this also on the back of the album is described): I think the above proposal to classify it as the '30th anniversary of Vandersteen's death' series is plausible (although I might describe it as '30th anniversary of Willy Vandersteen's death' or 'Memorial album'). I also seem to remember reading in an article that this was also one of the reasons that the album was made after all. And it does indeed prevent the limping count of the Homma series.

Incidentally, I have learned from this discussion that in the future I will not just change a series assignment, but first bring it up on the forum, so that a general consensus is on where an album is classified.

JozefK Standaard Uitgeverij has meanwhile announced part 5 of the homage series. In November 2021, 'De Voud Valk Club', drawn by Gerben Valkema, will be published. That means that it is now completely clear that The Sonometer cannot be considered a Hommage album. Then as Commemoration Willy Vandersteen ??

For me personally. It is just that we will soon not get the average comic-loving, Vandersteen-adoring self-proclaimed comic connoisseur of Flanders. But they got a chance enough to comment here and failed to do so, so ...

What is your proposal and in terms of implementation these publications do not fit in 1 series?
Nowhere in the manual does it say that a series can only be based on external characteristics.
It always says the same thing, they were published at the same time, for the same reason. "Commemoration Willy Vandersteen" covers the load, because all albums belong to that. One has a different cover than the other, but nothing else (incredible marketing, that people fall for it!).

In the meantime I have taken the plunge and tried to change the series name to 'Commemoration Willy Vandersteen', where I entered 1 as series number and wanted to use the addition a, b, c, etc. for the various editions. (except for 85 years of Fujitsu advertising). However, that only succeeded with the softcover edition, because the other editions are still on 'frozen' and are therefore still under the homage series, sometimes even with different series numbers. This is not a problem until November 3, but on that day the officially announced part 5 of the Hommage series will be released. Can I use this route to ask if the albums are removed from the 'frozen' position (including the French translation) or do I have to send an email to the administrator for each album?

Mark OK for you? For me anyway. I then added the mentions luxury and super luxury (pffff ....) for the "possessed owners" (crumpled?).

JozefK I think it's very well done, clear and it prevents confusion when part 5 from the Hommagereeks (title: De Vroemvroemclub) comes out in November. And also better than classifying it under the Blue Series, as I was over-enthusiastic about it before.

For those who follow; a new album in this series has now been released.
Because this is now the second album in that series and the name of the album series no longer fully covers the load, I have changed the name to "Hommage Blue series" by analogy with the text on the back cover; "pay ... a homage to the famous Blue Series by Willy Vandersteen".

JozefK Jozef K: Difficult to hear this... You write: 'a new album has been released in this series in the meantime''... In my opinion, that is actually the bottleneck, because... officially there is no "Hommage Blue Series" series. I immediately admit that it is confusing: The sonometer was explicitly not mentioned as part of the existing Hommage series, but released on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Willy Vandersteen's death, as discussed earlier. I also liked that it was labeled as such. This album, The lost joker, has been announced by the publisher as the next part (7) in the Hommage series. Although I admit that I personally think it looks just like The Sonometer does not belong. In itself, I can agree with your reasoning to make it a separate "Hommage Blue Series" series, were it not for the publisher not doing this. And that would again cause discontinuities in the future order of the "Hommage" sequence But again, I understand your thinking at. Although I have taken the liberty to mention in the details of De sonometer that the reason was the anniversary of Willy Vandersteen's death.

Pfff, we want to do it too well. The publisher should ask us in the future in which series they can publish albums ;)

Although I have taken the liberty to mention in the details of De sonometer that the reason was the anniversary of Willy Vandersteen's death.
Fine!

We will leave it as is for the time being, we will rely entirely on our 'progressive insight' in the future and will then make an extensive info page that gives the necessary criticism to the publisher, explains the lack of albums in a series, the limping story numbering discusses and lists all other irregularities.

We'll get back to it...

JozefK It is indeed advisable for the publisher to consult with us first, that will prevent a lot of trouble ;)
And fine - as far as I'm concerned - to leave it that way. The future will show which direction it will go and for now it is in any case important that there is a distinction with the original Blue Series.
Oh yes, before I forget, a compliment for the attempt at clarity. That should be Standard at the Publisher!
