Dear members of catawiki

I am new here and have a question.

I recently bought a folder with Bakelite LPs / gramophone records in a shop somewhere for 3.50.

It's a map of Beethoven. I will include as many details as possible below.

hereby:

Front page: Gramophone on the left with a listening dog on the right with the text: His Master's Voice.

Underneath

BEETHOVEN

On. 58

Concerto No.4 in G Major

for pianoforte and orchestra

played by

ARTHUR SCHNABEL

and the london philharmonic orchestra

(conducted by d'r malcolm sargent)

On the side it says:

181 beethoven concerto no. 4 in g major. at 58

There are a total of 4 double-sided plates from 1886 to 1889

I can see if I can post pictures. I'm going to take some time for that.

Hereby:

Would love to hear what the value of this is

Place items with clear scans in the catalog first.

Is the catalog part also the place to request valuations?

Then I can do that

If you enter the plates, we also know which plates are involved. A description never says much.

Off the cuff, it doesn't seem like a good buy to me. The market for classic 78 rpm records is almost non-existent.

If you already sell a 78 rpm record, packaging is very difficult, because those records are very fragile. With all due respect, that's not for an amateur like you.

Calling me an amateur is not respect... it's rather disrespectful and I don't have to tolerate. Even if you are an administrator.

You don't know me either, so you can't judge that either.

I'm a ''bigger'' collector than you think but just don't throw everything on the internet.

So if we're going to do this I'll be done soon.

I also need to see where I create a catalog.

It is a book consisting of 4 bakelite plates that are completely beautiful and of which the book is completely complete

And I don't know how I send something like that yet, but I will find out by then.

@gierigegoudzoek:

If you really knew:

- you wouldn't call 78rpm records Bakelite records. They are not Bakelite.

- You would not have inquired about the value. Then you already knew the value.

I see no reason to take back the word "amateur". And I do not think apologies are necessary.

Furthermore:

I do not experience it as pleasant when the casual passer-by (not being an active co-user) is angling for free appraisals. As a rule, such persons immediately left with the northern sun after obtaining information. Without a thank you.

Not everyone is like this ... come and say nothing.

But there will be reasons when that happens. So now it is difficult to do what? I am starting to have the urge to leave yes .... except for a number of forums there is always '' bullshit '' with my first contributions ..

I am asking for a valuation here because I do not find other places.

Why would a valuation cost money? I've never experienced that before.

Autominologist There's nothing wrong with being an amateur. sometimes I misunderstand it

if you want to know something from 'us' then there has to be something in return and that is very little in this case: just add the records in CW, no more no less ...

And because that in the past NEVER happened, everyone hated to answer these kinds of questions 'for free'. Please note: free, because there is no quid pro quo

I understand that.

I'll figure out how to put the plates in the catalog. I have to do other things first. Like my room. I will post them as soon as I have time. I really want an appraisal. I'm doing my best to add them.

Beste,

if you want an 'appraisal' it is best to search for plates via popsike.

Good sets sell for about $ 20-40 on the international market, but these are colossal shipping costs that can obscure results.

Maybe the collector is around the corner and you would like to pay the additional shipping costs of 30 euros that he / she would otherwise have to pay to get the set from America / Australia. Closer to home you can search between the Catawiki auctions via Google, maybe there is something similar?

I think I know what records you mean, stingy gold seeker. At that time those old records could not contain that much, so a concert had to be on several records. To sell them well and because they were very fragile, they were probably sold in those nice brown or black collection folders. I have some of them too, but I haven't gotten around to adding them just yet. When we talk about the same series. With collecting it is always the case that something has the price that the "madman" gives for it. Records are being collected again, but the old records and certainly the 78 rpm records are difficult to play on the modern record players and people now often only buy new records. That therefore has consequences for the value. I also collect them myself and see them between 10 and 30 euros, where they are more often sold around 10 euros (which I would pay for myself). I am not an appraiser, nor a manager of this section, but I speaking from my own experience, I hope this will help you and add your records.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for the advice and answers.

It is a brown folder. Very nice to know that those folders were made because the plates could not contain that much. I'm going to add those records too, but not right away .. I want to take the time for it first. It's not for a modern record player either;) but it's for a gramophone

If vertigo really knew about it, he would know the following ;-)

Most 78rpm records are made of shellac , some of Bakelite , and from the late 1950s they were made of vinyl .

I didn't know shellac yet.

It is from before the 50s. The plates are from 1889

I haven't forgotten about it yet. place them.

@wow:

If you really want to know something about a subject, you better not use Wikipedia (:-)

Just go to the Background page of 78 rpm record in the Catawiki catalog and see what's written there.

It is from before the 1950s. The plates are from 1889

@ stingy gold digger:

I think you are mistaken. It is very unlikely that your plates are from 1889. Malcolm Sargent had not yet been born in that year.

That site led me to http://www.gracyk.com/tips.shtml

That is a very entertaining text that I enjoyed reading (even though I have no interest in old records). Tim Gracyk gives an exhaustive overview of everything you can deal with as a seller of 78 rpm records. For some 'stingy prospectors' his conclusions will be quite a disappointment, but he brings it - where necessary - with some humor ;-)

A few quotes for the OP:

Heavy sets of classical music are also too common, and nobody today likes to hear classical music chopped into four minute segments.

Few are as old as many people assume. Don't mistake a patents date somewhere on a label for the date of the record you are holding.

@ vertigo: You can't know everything, although you still know so much about it:

Diamond Discs have surfaces made of Bakelite, an early thermoplastic.

Just scroll down and read from:

@wow:

I took a quick look, but I don't think the author of that site is saying anything very different from what I wrote here:

http://www.catawiki.nl/catalogus/platen-en-cd-s/dragers/83471-78-rpm-plaat#more

Especially this piece:

" According to the Dutch Wikipedia, some 78 rpm records were made of Bakelite. The associated data (labels, dates, etc.) are missing. Other sources show that the surface of the Edison Diamond Disc Records used Condensite, a variant of Bakelite/ bakelite. These records could only be used on special playback equipment with a diamond needle (moreover, the playing speed was 80 rpm). The "regular" 78 rpm records could not be played on this equipment (see text at : Edison Diamond Disc)."

A few more comments from me:

- In fact, the Edison Diamond Disc is not a 78 rpm record, but an 80 rpm record, which is confirmed by "your" website;

- The Edison Diamond Disc story was already known to me, so it doesn't really add anything.

- If everyone would read the Background pages carefully, it would save a lot of time ; - )

- What exactly are you trying to say, wow?

Bakelite was also used, albeit to a modest extent and at 2 rpm more than 78 ;-)
