De Europese ministerraad voert vanaf 2010 echter nieuwe regels in. Die bepalen dat het Vaticaan voortaan minstens 51% van zijn munten in het normale geldverkeer in omloop moet brengen. Rome wil zich aan de nieuwe regels houden en heeft al laten weten dat de oplage van de Vaticaanse munten van een bedrag van 1 tot 2,1 miljoen euro verhoogd wordt.
