@Tammo:

Punk / New Wave could also include Postpunk. In practice it appears that there is already a lot of Postpunk in it.

Pop and rock: Progressive rock and Pop and rock: Symphonic rock can be mixed together. And Metal also features Metal and Hardrock: Symphonic.

These 3 headings could be merged as:

Pop and Rock: Prog rock / Symphonic rock (NL); Prog Rock / Symphonic Rock (English); Prog rock / Rock symphonique (French); Prog Rock / Symphony-Rock (German).

Probably a musical lay question: doesn't Postpunk automatically fall under Punk?

Why should "Pop en Rock:" appear in NL?
Just like in the other languages, can't it be "Progressive- / Symphonic Rock"?

Or perhaps call it the same in all languages: "Progressive- / Symphonic Rock".

@Tammo:

Postpunk is a successor to punk. Is also more musical, less straightforward.

I also noticed that the addition is missing in other languages. The prefix Pop and Rock does have the advantage that you will find all rock-related genres together.

Although I do think that 'Pop and' should be left out.

I think it's a good idea to call the genre the same for all languages: Progressive- / Symphonic Rock.

P.S. Punk basically refers to a relatively short period (1977-1981). With Postpunk you give n.m.m. indicates that later music may also be welcome.

@Vertigo

I still own a few records, such as those by The Cosmic Jokers, Jane, Guru Guru, Wallenstein, Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk and others

I think they all fall under Krautrock.

What do you think Krautrock should be included in the Genres.

And another thing, what's with the Neue Deutsche Welle, was very popular here in Germany in the 1980s.

That Dutch and Cabaret have to be separated is a clear fact, but that manual work takes some time.

But I don't think there is that language problem.

you have:

Smartlap - songs of life in Dutch

Chansons are songs in French

Schlager songs in German

and so there will also be names for songs in various tasks

name them (I don't know that, but I will say, Oh yes)

Pop / Rock

POP is short for popular, right?

so everything that is sold collects is Pop

and that can consist of:

Rock- Progressive - Symphonic - Hard - Metal - Punk - Folk - Country - Glamor. and so you can name a few more

we have Jazz

we have Bleus

only how far do you want to go, it must remain clear.

and you can keep it small by keeping it small

We still have Classic that also consists of several. Perhaps a little more clear?

We have nursery rhymes - Christmas carols Santa Claus songs Church "songs

World music that's the best receptacle

And spoken word, but that is often cabaret as well, so that is also possible in the other languages

as long as we keep it simple

I think a maximum of 30 total

Before we get into a discussion of all kinds of genres, it seems more sensible to try to define what is meant by Genre.

Who has a good and concise description for that?
Once that has been established, we can further try to give content to Genre

Now just a small excursion suggested by Rene.

Obviously the more scans the better

mandatory third scan (last week I think we had a discussion about Fleetwood Mac if he had placed the 3rd scan side A it was resolved immediately)

Scan 1 front cover

Scan the tracks listing on the cover very often on the back

Scan 3 the A side of the carrier

(if you now have a girth without cover, then the A side on scan 1 and on scan 3

There are also collectors who just leave the packaging sealed then just 3 on the back.

(the value really doesn't increase with the last major release of the Beatles, there have been many complaints that sound was not good and a lot of swaps just that sealed doesn't count for your winnings)

Nowadays I always place the 3 scans item and in my own collection: scan 1 front cover and scan 2 A side or middle of the cover or attachment and san 3 always B side.

I have singles so complete and LPs too.

Then also for me as management very important we once had a conversion of the tracks fields! 7 years ago?

then we could paste the plain text into the tracks fields in one go

The big advantage was that it saved a lot of time to also place the tracks there are albums that are 25x or as an item in the catalog other release number other country other cover you name it

advantage Place 1 item completely, copy and paste the rest

Another advantage if you happen to have a malfunction, not much to try again later.

I hope we can get that back, (it suddenly disappeared about 4 years ago)

also the comment of Jilles: artist and guest artist only that will be more difficult

because we then chose to make compilation albums all 13 good etc various artists main artist and the artist became guest artist

In addition, there is a lot of input where the main artist has also been placed with the guest artist (have you ever thought that this could not be automatically removed (main artist = guest artist then guest artist empty field (that must be possible, right?)

I also hoped that with the new release, the possibility will come or may come

I want to see all LPs in a group

or all CDs

Singles and EPs

Now you can only select 1 type of carrier, I had hoped you could make a wider selection. Is that still possible?

Now last point, I think not only for this section

You have collection boxes from an artist with, for example, 10 LPs

You can add the LPs separately, you can also add the box with the [full box] tracks fields you can fill in

also occurs in books and DVDs, but it would be nice if you could link the full box just like you could link an item to another section

only within the category that possibility does not exist

@Tammo

Yes, that's the problem with Genre.

I asked Google how many Genres there are, someone wrote as many as there are people on the earth, Genre is different for everyone.

I agree that with LastDodo the Genres should be kept limited so that it should be understandable for most people.

Separating a few Genres such as Dutch and cabaret, Pop and Rock should also be disassembled, Then remove a few more Genres from the list, add a few more and you are there.

What has to be removed, what has to be added, yes, the expert can deal with it

Would also like to help with this, as far as it is in my power.

Greetings John

Take it easy with this, this is what the Music managers are about. This is not a rush job, we must avoid having to do double work in the future.

Once that has been established, we can further try to give content to Genre

We have done that once in the past and after a lot of haggling (and I see that happening again now: (Post) punk ;-)) the current list was created. After that, some genres have been added every now and then.

What we first have to ask ourselves is whether it makes sense to indicate a genre. If so, you will have to distinguish between genres and styles. Within the blues, for example, you have several styles: Chicago style (including Muddy Waters), Texas style (Johnny Copeland), Zydeco / Cajun (Clifton Chenier) etc.

Personally, I don't find it all that interesting: Music has only two aspects for me: I like it or I don't like it. Sometimes there is a little in-between ;-)

Just like Minimal Music, you either hate it or you love it, there is no middle ground.

I think adding a genre is completely pointless, everyone makes something different at for example Zappa. This cannot be categorized under any heading

Ravel's bolero, one person thinks it's classical music, but I think it's as minimal as it gets ...

From the Wikipedia:

"Minimalist music or minimal music is a style of music with repetition - often of short musical phrases, with subtle variations over a long period of time, or stagnation, often in the form of long held tones - an accent on consonant harmonies and a clear tempo. This form of contemporary classical music originated around 1970 from downtown music . "

Minimal music is a style or subgenre in the tradition of classical music. In my opinion, the contradiction you mean does not exist.

@Tammo, Record managers, collectors
I have been changing a lot of 78 rpm records lately.
Now I noticed that many records have the dance style on the record.
A few examples, Tango, Waltz, Slow Foxtrott and so on.
Now my question, does it seem to you what to include this with the Genres?
Regards John.

No. That only makes it even more complicated and more prone to errors. I cannot imagine that there are still many people who buy records based on (style) dance style.

@Beheerders records
Most older records often have songs from movies.
Take e.g. # 6722253
Now my question, where do these Songs belong, to Soundtrack, to Radio TV or Filmtunes, or to neither, or is there in the future only Filmtunes will be added to the Genres.
Regards John.

If it concerns the original film version, then the song belongs to Soundtrack (possibly plus Radio, TV or Filmtune). When it comes to a cover of a song from a movie, for example the umpteenth version of 'The Shadow of Your Smile', then, as far as I am concerned, it is only a Radio, TV or Film tune.

As far as I am concerned, the original music (recognition tune) of a radio or TV show also falls under Soundtrack.

I may hope that at least Soundtrack continues to exist as a type / genre. or Filmtune does not seem essential to me as a type / genre.

What I have presented above is my interpretation. I think the type / genre Radio, TV or Film tune was once introduced by Arco without consultation. Unfortunately he did not provide any explanation on the Background page. It could be that he only intended this type / genre for the recognition melody (generic) of a radio, TV show or film.

Dear Kevin.
I read your mail and saw that you have a part of this record # 1393542 at Genre, which I changed in Schlager, rejected it, and changed it back to Pop and Rock, which it actually isn't, they are Neue Deutsche Welle Songs.
But this is not in Genre, I would have liked because here in Germany a lot of Artists and Bands have made music under the Neue Deutsche Welle movement.
Just like the Genre Krautrock, entered a few CDs with Krautrock music this week, and Krautrock is just not there.
But maybe these Genres will be there yes added again because LastDodo wants to become more international and not only for Dutch collectors.
Regards John.

Genres can be discussed for a long time: so many people, so many wishes.
I disapprove if something I think is good is changed. Pop and Rock is very broad, so it often suffices. Here also.

If you add there as an extra Schlager: top.

However, if you replace Pop and Rock with Schlager, then you are going to replace one basically good description with another. I disapprove. Extra genre works better here.
Example:
Falco - Der Kommissar: Is certainly "Pop and Rock", possibly Schlager (depending on how you describe Schlager), Rap could be, Disco is something to be said, Neue Deutsche Welle too.
If you add one or more of these descriptions to this song: I approve them.

I think we have been thinking about expanding the genres for at least 12 years, without however becoming too specialized want to become because of a too long, cluttered, list of choices.
I have no fundamental objections to NDW and Krautrock (or all the different dance movements, or any movement whatsoever). Just can't add them as an ordinary administrator. And would only do that after consultation with other administrators.

It is incomprehensible to me that it takes at least 12 years to add a few Genres, it is similar to the new airport in Berlin, which has also taken so long, and is not quite ready yet.
But by the way, one can add a few Genres after and after, but can't be that hard.
Would like to know who is stopping that, just talk among themselves as administrators, and Kees is done.
Regards John.

Here we go again.
Now you've just taken that bit out of my discussion.
Also wrote that you can separate a few things, like Pop and Rock, because in my opinion a lot of songs are Pop, and not Rock.
Yes, a few can be removed, and others can be added, then they also end up with about the same number.
In any case, I don't think it is It should take 12 years to fix something like this.
