Pep (magazine)

The first issue of the weekly magazine 'Pep' appeared on October 6, 1962. Pep was intended for readers who had outgrown 'Donald Duck', but still wanted to continue reading comics. The weekly had laid the foundation for many comics, such as 'Asterix' and 'Coco Bill'. In addition, the magazine offered young Dutch cartoonists a stage. Especially between 1970 and 1975 'Pep' was the leading comics magazine in the Netherlands.

Pep was a Dutch comics weekly that appeared from 1962 to 1975. The first Pep appeared on October 6, 1962 and was published by De Geïllustreerde Pers NV in Amsterdam. The cover features Mickey Mouse and Tintin shaking hands under the headline: Mickey and Tintin in Pep.

The name Pep was explained on the first page: "Pep is an English word for spunk, fire, speed and zest for life. That's why Pep is a leaf with pep".

Initially Pep mainly contained comics from Belgium and France such as Colonel Clifton (Raymond Macherot), Michel Vaillant, Dan Cooper (Edition Lombard), Hoempa Pa (Goscinny and Uderzo) and Tintin (Hergé), and from the Walt Disney stable as Spin and Marty, Pietje Pech and Mickey Mouse.

With number 1 of 1970 there was a new formula: a new headline, a thicker page (from 32 to 48 pages) and above all more attention for Dutch artists. Agent 327 of Martin Lodewijk and De Generaal of Peter de Smet made their debut in Pep. Other important contributions were made by Dick Matena (De Argonautjes), Fred Julsing (Wellington Wish) and Willy Lohmann (Kraaienhove).

In addition to comics, Pep also featured short stories; part of it was illustrated by Hans G. Kresse. There was also a letter section, advertisements, puzzles, interviews, informative articles on a wide range of subjects (including pop artists), "exhalers" and "pep records" (centerfolds).

From number 6 of 1972 Oberon BV in Haarlem was mentioned as publisher. From issue 22 of 1974, the number of "regular" pages decreased from 48 to 32. New from that issue on was Peptoe, a 20-page stapled black-and-white section on cheaper paper, each filled with one comic strip. New comics such as Conan, Rahan, and Ton and Tineke appeared for Pep. Peptoe later disappeared, the latter being in issue 17 of 1975.

The last editor-in-chief mentioned was Frits van der Heide in issue 10 of 1975. The editors also consisted of Jan van Erp (1st ed.), Stef Keizer, Patrick Wessels and Anneke van Wissen.

Pep's last issue was number 39 of 1975. Due to a merger of two large publishers, De Geïllustreerde Pers and De Spaarnestad (publisher of Sjors, among others), these two magazines were merged into a new magazine in September 1975: Eppo. Some successful series from both Pep and Sjors returned to Eppo, but new series were also recorded.
