Cochin is a town, at present part of the state of Kerala, situated in the southwest of India and bordered by the Arabian Sea. The location appeared suitable for the trade of spices. The area therefore had subsequent different occupants (trade posts), the last being the British. The introduction of a postal system by the Rajahs was inspired by the extensive trade connections.
Most stamps have the Umbrella watermark, usually one per stamp (see picture). From the beginning of the stamp production, the position of the watermark was not considered important and can be found in all positions possible. From 1911 however, attention was paid to this aspect and the umbrella is usually found to be upright only.
With overprinted stamps, usually varieties can be found in the figures or the distance between the lines.
With the service stamps (On C G S) there are differences in the characters, like e.g., the shape of the O (round or oval).
For the 1916 issue four perforators were used, differing in gauge. Some stamps exist with up to four different perforations: comb 13.9, comb 13.6, line 13.8 and line 14.2
From 1943 a new watermark was introduced (Government Of Cochin with decorations).Still present remainders of paper with the old watermark Umbrella were used up for some issues, and also appears in some overprinted stamps from earlier issues.
The stamps of Cochin were also valid on mail to Travancore. From 1st of July 1949, both areas formed the new state of Travancore-Cochin, issuing own stamps.
