The first Belgian postage stamp dates from 1849 and was printed in the premises of the Belgian Post Office at Brussels North Station. This printing house is known as Zegeldrukkerij Brussel (Brussels Stamp Printing House) and is probably officially known as the "General Seal Workshop."

In 1869, this printing house moved under the same name to the buildings of a former candle factory on Vaartdijk in Mechelen. The candle factory never opened, and the buildings were taken over by the Belgian National Railway Company. The printing house remained active there until 1993, and the building has since been listed as a protected monument and architectural heritage.
