Peace and Trade (Paix et Commerce); a series of stamps issued in France between 1876 and 1900. The stamps show an allegorical representation of a female figure "Peace" and the Greek god Hermes ("Trade") next to a globe. More

This allegorical representation is sometimes confused with the "Shipping and Trade" issues for the French Colonies. That seal, however, shows a different allegorical representation (eg flag and no globe).

The stamps have a perforation of 14:13½ but there are also imperforate issues. The stamps are printed on colored paper, and there have been 5 printing periods. There are 3 distinguishable types of this stamp, these can best be distinguished by the placement of the text "JA SAGE INV" at the bottom left, under the text "REPUBLIQUE". A secondary difference is that with type II stamps there is a longer vertical line through 'Greenland' on the globe. With type I stamps it is just a small line starting at the bottom of Greenland.
