Starrs, Mike

Mike Starrs is a singer of Scottish descent. He left Scotland for London in the late 1960s and worked in several smaller bands. Starrs was offered a contract by producer Tony Atkins for Marquee Productions and released a number of failed singles. He joined Colosseum II in 1975 after hearing him sing in a local pub and recommended him for their first album "Strange New Flesh" in 1976. Starrs' powerful and distinctive singing style complimented Gary Moore's guitar work, the keyboards by Don Airey and the rhythm sections of Neil Murray and Jon Hiseman. The end result was a potential British supergroup in the making. The album was not a commercial success, however, but the band was already working on the follow-up when Starrs was fired. It turned out that the wife of the owner of the record label did not appreciate his flamboyant stage performance. Colosseum II went on to produce two other largely instrumental albums, with a different record company and without Starrs, who also failed to achieve a commercial breakthrough.

Starrs toured Europe and the United States with Colosseum II in 1975-1976. Then they moved to Hamburg where he later took over from John Lawton at Lucifer's Friend. Two albums followed: "Good Time Warrior" (1978) and "Sneak Me In" (1980), after which Lawton took over again. He was also involved in the tours and albums with the German bands, Toneband and Duesenberg.

In 2002 he performed with Lake Reformed under Alex Conti. They toured regularly and in 2005 released their album "The Blast of Silence" and the subsequent DVD, where he was the lead singer and co-writer of one of the tracks. He left the band in 2010.

Starrs' vocal stylings resurfaced on the reissued and expanded "Strange New Flesh" (2005), which collected unreleased material from the original Colosseum II lineup.

Twee albums volgden: "Good Time Warrior" (1978) en "Sneak Me In" (1980), waarna Lawton weer overnam.
