The 16 bit Super NES was the successor of the 8 bit NES. It was released in Japan in 1990, in the USA in 1991 and finally in Europe in 1992. The NTSC(US) and the NTSC(J)/PAL version have a different design. In Japan the SNES is known as the Super Famicom. Together with the Sega Mega Drive it was the most successful 16 bit video game console. A total of about 50 million units were sold. Several classic game series such as Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong were made exlusively for this console. The SNES kept on selling well for a long time even after the introduction of the first 32 bit consoles. Later on a Japanese Super Famicom Jr was released. De SNES was succeeded by the Nintendo N64.
