The Incal, an adventure by John Difool is a French science fiction comic strip created by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Mœbius (Jean Giraud) in 1980. More

The revolutionary comic series "Arzach" marked Mœbius's (Jean Giraud) international breakthrough. He was contacted by both French and American filmmakers. His first contact was with Alejandro Jodorowsky and Dan O'Bannon for a film inspired by Frank Herbert's book "Dune."
With Dan O'Bannon, Mœbius created the comic strip "The Long Tomorrow" for Métal Hurlant nos. 7 and 8, 1976, in which we already recognize a precursor to the world of John DiFool.

In 1975, Jodorowsky discovered Mœbius's science fiction comics and Jean Giraud's Blueberry albums at a gas station. Seduced by the drawings, and unaware that they were by the same artist, he considered hiring Mœbius for the costumes for his film and Giraud for the storyboard. He then met Giraud at his press officer's home, realized his mistake, and offered him work on the Dune project. When the latter hesitated, he threatened to hire Philippe Druillet instead, which convinced Giraud to do it himself.

But the project was doomed to failure due to a lack of funds. This event, which ended nearly two years of work, plunged many of the film's collaborators into despair. But Jodorowsky and Mœbius met again by chance, at a concert by the French singer Barbara, where they were seated next to each other. From this second encounter, the two men hatched the idea of collaborating on a comic book series. Thus, The Incal, a science fiction saga featuring John DiFool as its protagonist, was born, published in six volumes between 1980 and 1988.

In the distant future, shabby R-rated private detective John DiFool receives the Incal of Light, a white pyramid with extraordinary powers, from the hands of a dying Mont (an alien from another galaxy). However, the Incal is coveted by numerous factions seeking to exploit it for their own gain: the Techno-Popes (Techno-Technos), a sect of technocrats, the Préz and his hunchbacked men, the Impéroratriz, and the Monts (Bergs)…
By escaping, Difool is dragged against his will into an adventure that is completely beyond him and will transform him into the savior of two galaxies.

It's more than just science fiction... It's a thriller, a disillusioning glimpse into a disturbing future (perhaps soon to be ours), a humorous look at our own aspirations, an esoteric tale on many levels, a love story, a psychoanalysis, and what not...

Initially, John is naive and disillusioned. As his adventures progress, he matures, but he will always struggle with his responsibilities. He doesn't want to be a hero. His heroic actions are motivated by fear or love.
His memory erasure at the end of the "Before the Incal" cycle, which removes "his memory and part of his intelligence" (according to one of the scientists who took part in the operation), also has a strong impact on his personality: thus, at the beginning of "The Incal", and probably during the ten years that elapse between the two cycles, John is nothing more than a being without a personality, whose only concern is to deal with the most sordid cases of his detective work and to spend his free time with homeoputes (artificial prostitutes).
This new state of mind contrasts with the intelligence, courage and honesty he occasionally demonstrated during his adventures in the “Before the Incal” cycle.

Door te ontsnappen, wordt Difool tegen zijn wil meegesleurd in een avontuur dat hem volledig te boven gaat en dat hem zal transformeren tot de redder van twee sterrenstelsels.

Het is meer dan alleen sciencefiction... Het is een thriller, een ontgoochelende kijk op een verontrustende toekomst (misschien binnenkort die van ons), een grappige blik op onze eigen aspiraties, een esoterisch verhaal op verschillende niveaus, een liefdesverhaal, een psychoanalyse en wat niet meer...

Aanvankelijk is John naïef en gedesillusioneerd. Naarmate zijn avonturen vorderen, wordt hij volwassener, maar hij zal altijd moeite hebben met het dragen van zijn verantwoordelijkheden. Hij wil geen held zijn. Zijn heldhaftige daden worden gemotiveerd door angst of liefde.
