Original political cartoon on card in charcoal, no information on where or when it was published, 1929, shows ‘Marianne’ (France) drawing a line through the word ‘oorlog’ (war). France has closure for WW1 after Germany has accepted the Young Plan (1929), which finally settled the problem of German reparation payments to the satisfaction of the French. It could however equally well refer to France allowing Germany to join the League of Nations (so rejoining the international community), which led to a marked improvement in Franco-German relations, but this would then date the cartoon to 1926. Framed and mounted in a simple wooden frame for an overall size of 46 x 38 cm, image size 35 x 27 cm, signed lower right. Framer label on verso: ‘P. Klein, 144 Avenue de l’Hippodrome Bruxelles’. Also written in pencil on the rear: “Dessin de 1928 ou 1929" and the title “Son Geste” (her gesture). In very good condition.
