Original brush and ink editorial cartoon drawing on art card, 1914, published in the New York Sun, shows a grieving Britannia as she looks at a list of "British Losses, 57,000 Men since war began". This number of casualties had already been reached by the end of October 1914 (and is coincidentally the same number lost on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916) which will date this cartoon to the last months of 1914. It also refers to a recruitment poster being used at the time in Britain: ‘England expects every man to do his duty (and join the army today)’ Card size 59 x 39 cm (23 x 14.5 inch), image size 50 x 33 cm, signed bottom right. In overall good condition.
